「US Open 2009」の全日程が終了。男子シングルスは、ロジャー・フェデラー選手が、20歳の新鋭、マーティン・デルポトロ選手にファイナルセットまでもつれこみ、大接戦の末、敗退するという大波乱！？で幕を閉じた。時代は、既にフェデラー選手から移行が始まっているということであろうか。

それはさておき、テニスプレーヤとして世界を転戦するようになれば、やはりある程度は英語が操れた方が良い。私個人は、ビジネスの世界で、英語でのコミュニケーションが必須であるから、テニス選手の英語であれば、ほとんど理解できるのであまり不自由を感じたことはない。と記述すると、とっても簡単に聞こえるが、実際にはかなり苦労した。

では、どうやって英語を習得するか。テニス選手の英語の勉強方法は、テニスに関連することで勉強するのが最も手っ取り早いことは、私が本ブログで改めて詳細を記述しなくても良いだろう。ネットを探せば、幸い山のようにテニスに関する英語があふれている。特に最近では、英語によるプロテニスプレーヤのブログが公開されていて、英語の勉強に関しては、教材を探す必要はない、と言って良いだろう。

ただ、溢れる英語教材から、できれば効果的に英語を勉強したい。そこで、私のお勧めは・・・「Caroline Wozniacki Official Blog」である。多くの英語のブログに目を通したが、このブログが最も簡単な英語を利用、スラング（俗語）が少ない、といった理由である。ちょっと引用してみよう。

I want to share with you one last blog from New York before I play in the US Open Finals tonight against Kim Clijsters which I am so excited about and really looking forward to because it is my first Grand Slam Final appearance and I am just so happy!

Yesterday was a really long day here in New York, and I arrived at the site around 11:30 a.m. to get a hit in before my semifinal match against Yanina Wickmayer from Belgium but shortly after it began to rain again. All day we were on call here at the site, and several times the tournament officials told us to be ready in 15 or 20 minutes, but then after I hurried to get my leg wrapped and be prepared to play, it would start raining again and we were on another rain delay. It was tough mentally with all of this going on, but I kept my mind off of things by reading one of my books, hanging out with my family and friends and then taking a nap and eating a good meal.

如何だろう！？上記の文章で、全ての単語が高校生が理解すべき英単語ばかりである。それでいて、英語の言い回しでは、日常生活で使われるものが多い。これ位は、理解できる英語力を誰でも備えていたいし、上記のような表現が、すらすらっと口から出てくるようになれば、充分である。どうも、日本人は、英語を難しく考える傾向があるが、英会話では、上記程度の、即ち中学生程度の英単語で十分である。
